Repair or Replace? A Plumber's Honest Rule for Fixtures and Heaters

Every plumber gets asked this, and the honest answer is not always replace, and not always repair. It depends on age, condition, and the cost of the repair compared with a new unit.
The Rule We Use
A repair that costs a large fraction of a new fixture or system, on equipment near the end of its life, with repeat faults, is worth replacing. A single-part fault on younger, sound equipment is usually a repair.
Examples
A new cartridge in a sound faucet is a repair. A corroded faucet body with no parts available is a replacement. A new element in a young water heater is a repair. A leaking tank is a replacement, because tank leaks do not get better.
What You Should Get
Both options, with real numbers, before work starts. If a company will only quote replacement, or only quote repair, ask for the other option and the reasoning behind it.
