No Hot Water? 3 Checks Before You Call

No hot water feels like an emergency, especially on a cold morning, but a few safe checks narrow the fault fast and save a wasted visit. They do not replace a diagnosis, but they help your plumber arrive with the right parts.
1. Check Power or Gas
For electric heaters, check the breaker. For gas heaters, check that gas supply is on and that the pilot or ignition has not gone out, following the heater's own instructions.
2. Check the Thermostat Setting
A thermostat set too low, or accidentally changed, is a common cause of lukewarm water. Note the setting before you change anything, so you can report it.
3. Check Cold Taps
If cold taps run normally but hot taps do not, the problem is in the heater or hot-water line, not the main supply. If no taps run at all, that is a different, more urgent problem.
When to Call
Water pooling around the tank, rusty hot water, a rumbling tank, or a heater that keeps tripping its breaker all need a visit. A leaking tank does not get better, and a tripping breaker should not be reset repeatedly.
