Clogged Drain: What You Can Try, and When to Call a Plumber

A plunger helps a shallow clog. A drain snake helps some deeper clogs. Chemical cleaner rarely helps a solid blockage, and repeated use can damage older pipes. The question is not whether DIY can ever work, it is whether your clog is the kind DIY actually fixes.
Try First, Safely
For a single slow sink or tub, a plunger, used correctly with a good seal, is a safe first try. Remove visible hair from a tub drain. Check that other fixtures drain normally, if they do, the clog is likely in that branch.
Stop and Call When
Several drains back up together, a toilet gurgles when another fixture drains, the same drain clogs every few weeks, or water backs up into a shower or tub. Those point to a main-line or sewer problem, not a shallow clog.
What a Plumber Does Differently
We identify branch versus main line, clear the blockage with the right tool, and, for recurring main-line clogs, camera-inspect the line so you see whether roots, a break, or a belly is the real cause.
